What is IM-SURE?

The Division of Biological Sciences at The University of Montana invites you to apply for the Introductory Multicultural Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (IM-SURE) program. The program is an opportunity for incoming freshman and undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds to gain experience in environmental biology in the field, the laboratory, or both. Students will conduct an independent research project with guidance from a University of Montana faculty mentor and their research group. Students will learn about the experimental design process while conducting a research project in wildlife ecology, microbial ecology, or plant ecology. Students will also participate in a weekly brown bag lunch series to include guest speakers, support for writing up their research project, and additional training in Environmental Biology and present summaries of their work in a mini-symposium at the end of the summer. Undergraduate students from any academic institution within the U.S. and Puerto Rico are invited to apply. We aim to form a cohort of students representing a broad array of cultural backgrounds and experiences, so Native American students, other underrepresented groups in the sciences, and students of the first generation in their family to attend college are especially encouraged to apply.

Undergrads from near, far unveil research at UM conference
It doesn’t matter whether a mountain white-crowned sparrow nests high in a tree or low to the ground, its reproductive success is the same. That’s the conclusion of University of Montana student Brett Klaassen Van Oorschot, an ecology and organismal biology major, and Ondi Crino, a doctoral student. On Wednesday, Klaassen Van Oorschot was one of 47 students who presented the findings of their 10-week summer research projects at the inaugural undergraduate research symposium sponsored by the Office of Research and Educational Opportunities for Students, otherwise known as OREOS.
